Here is the first of two pages of images I will show of his work for the Hans Brinker Hostel/Hotel in Amsterdam. The hotel approached Kessels to do some advertising for them back in the 90's as their hotel had an awful reputation for being dirty and bad, and they were always getting complaints Kessels decided that the best thing to do about this would be to give it to people straight, tell them that the hotel is awful, and grimy, and disgusting, so that when they went there, they would not be disappointed or shocked. His posters feature tag lines like 'NOW! A bed in every room', 'NOW! More rooms without a window' 'NOW! A door in every room', all of which advertise functions of a hotel that you would expect to be standard, but are talked about here like they are selling points. They also went round Amrsterdam putting flags in piles of dog shit, saying that 'There's more of this in our main entrance'. Other brilliant ways he has reinvented the hotel is by showing a room of a premium, five-star, hotel, and covering it in asterix *, then in the bottom corner you notice an asterix saying '*not included'. I love all the ways he advertises this hotel, I think they're funny, witty, and engaged the reader. It's safe to say that the hotel doesn't receive any complaints any more, and that the popularity and bookings has increased massively.
