This summer Castle Market closes it's doors to the public forever, it has been coming for a long time, but with the construction of the new marketplace at the foot of The Moor, the market is closing for good. The market takes it's name from the fact that it lies on the location of a medieval castle that was on the site, and it was during it's time as a castle that a market was first held on the ground. Over the years the castle has been demolished, rebuilt and demolished again as the city of Sheffield was built around and over it. It was during the construction of the modern buildings on the site, built in the early 20th century, that the castle ruins were discovered beneath the earth, resulting in the name of the market. The castle has been investigated and has been discovered to be one of the 30 largest castles of the time, larger than Warwick castle. The future of the markets have been debated since the 1980s but with the redevelopment of The Moor and the new indoor marketplace being built, castle markets is going to be demolished, for a proposed pedestrian access to the city centre. I am going to be investigating and documenting the markets throughout this project and will base my fanzine around them.
